چکیده

The largest geomagnetic storms of solar cycle 24 so far occurred on 2015 March 17 and June 22 with Dst minima of 223 and 195 nT, respectively. Both of the geomagnetic storms show a multi-step development. We examine the plasma and magnetic field characteristics of the driving coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in connection with the development of the geomagnetic storms. A particular effort is to reconstruct the in situ structure using a Grad– Shafranov technique and compare the reconstruction results with solar observations, which gives a larger spatial perspective of the source conditions than one-dimensional in situ measurements. Key results are obtained concerning how the plasma and magnetic field characteristics of CMEs control the geomagnetic storm intensity and variability: (1) a sheath-ejecta-ejecta mechanism and a sheath-sheath-ejecta scenario are proposed for the multi-step development of the 2015 March 17 and June 22 geomagnetic storms, respectively; (2) two contrasting cases of how the CME flux-rope characteristics generate intense geomagnetic storms are found, which indicates that a southward flux-rope orientation is not a necessity for a strong geomagnetic storm; and (3) the unexpected 2015 March 17 intense geomagnetic storm resulted from the interaction between two successive CMEs plus the compression by a high-speed stream from behind, which is essentially the “perfect storm” scenario proposed by Liu et al. (i.e., a combination of circumstances results in an event of unusual magnitude), so the “perfect storm” scenario may not be as rare as the phrase implies.

Impact of Solar and Interplanetary Disturbances on Space Weather

Solar activity is the dynamic energy source behind all solar phenomena driving space weather. During an active solar period, violent eruptions occur more often on the Sun. The solar flares (SFs) and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) shoot energetic and highly charged particles towards Earth that ensuing ionospheric and geomagnetic disturbances. The some geomagnetic disturbances illuminate night ski...

A Historical Review of the Geomagnetic Storm-Producing Plasma Flows from the Sun

The concept of geomagnetic storm-producing solar plasma flows has evolved and advanced considerably over the last 100 years or so. This particular field of study began in an effort to understand geomagnetic disturbances and the aurora. The purpose of this paper is try to follow the ways in which early concepts evolved to later ones, not to review each concept in detail. It is fascinating to see...

Investigation of the effects of geomagnetic storms on ionospheric irregularities using the combination of ground-based GNSS and SWARM satellites

Geomagnetic storms are one of the main causes of ionospheric perturbations in different sizes, depending on their intensity, which could disturb radio signals passing through this medium. On September 6-12, 2017, the sudden storm commencement (SSC) was the most massive geomagnetic storm of the year due to the X9 solar flare caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME). IMF-Bz and Dst values increase...

Particle acceleration in geospace and its association with solar events

Particle acceleration is a prominent feature of the geomagnetic storm, which is the prime dynamic process in Geospace the near-Earth space environment. Magnetic storms have their origin in solar events, which are transient disturbances of the solar atmosphere and radiation that propagate as variations of the solar wind elds and particles through interplanetary space to the Earth's orbit. During...

Prediction of Geomagnetic Storms Associated With Halo CMEs of January and April 1997

The 6 January 1997 and 7 April 1997 halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were associated with interplanetary magnetic clouds observed by WIND that led to increased geomagnetic storm activity as indicated by the hourly Dst index. A recently developed storm-prediction method is retrospectively applied to these two solar wind (SW) structures. The results are described in detail. Had the algorithm be...
